Chiropractic is an independent healthcare profession specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the joints, ligaments, muscles and nerves in the body, particularly the spine. Chiropractors provide care for patients of all ages, who present with both acute and chronic conditions, ranging from back and neck pain to tension headaches and sciatica. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including manipulation, soft tissue massage, ultrasound, and advice on exercise and lifestyle.
A Medical Research Council clinical trial and its follow-up, reported in the British Medical Journal in 1990 and 1995, that chiropractic treatment of back pain was more effective than hospital outpatients treatment. The European Commission Acute Low Back Guildlines includes manipulation as an effective treatment for low back pain.
Following the Chiropractic Act of 1996, the profession has been regulated by the General Chiropractic Council www.gcc-uk.org
